I'll be becoming a road warrior soon, traveling back and forth between Ohio and New Jersey for family events big and small. Although I now consider an hour and a half drive to be exhausting, I want to be true to the promise I made to my mother in law that our move to Ohio will not make her see her grandkids any less. To prepare for all those hours on the road, I've been beefing up our DVD collection.

While attending the Toy Fair a few months ago, I discovered an educational DVD series that has been a big hit with the under-seven set in my house. The Little Hardhats Series features in-depth coverage of the stuff that fascinates little boys: construction, airplanes, trucks, and trains. The movies are essentially a cross between reality TV and documentaries. The narrator, always a very male sounding expert in the field, narrates the action on the screen and provides a great overview of how things work. Each lasts a little over thirty minutes and costs $19.95 in a plastic case or $17.95 in a recycled paper sleeve.

There are eight titles in the Little Hard Hats series, covering most types of motor vehicles. I'm hopeful that a race car version will be coming out soon. Here are the current titles:

• House Construction Ahead
• Where the Garbage Goes
• Farm Country Ahead
• Big Boats and Busy Harbors

After much viewing and a rigorous voting process, we declared "Cleared for Take-off" our family favorite. All three kids were fascinated with the behind the scenes footage: what happens to the luggage and the air control tower.
